IELTS Essay Topic: Environment

Explain some of the ways in which humans are damaging the environment.

What can government do to address these problems? What can individual people do?

Answer:

Environmental destruction is an important issue nowadays which humans contributed much to the worsening problem. Human activities increasingly affect the environment as people continuously throwing garbage everywhere. This paper will identify the necessary steps to be taken by the government and its people to solve the issue of garbage pollution.

Even before the pandemic, waste management especially in low-income economies is already a huge challenge. When the coronavirus has then spread like wildfire in late 2019, masks became ubiquitous across the world. Many countries mandated their citizens to wear face masks and other personal protective equipment to protect them from the virus. As a result, discarded face masks can now be found scattered elsewhere. One primary action that governments must undertake is to develop a waste disposal guidelines specifically design to the current situation. A well-define strategy should be in place to ensure that discarded face masks and other used PPEs are being dispose properly in designated areas. 

On a similar note, people in parallel with the government has a huge role to play in the issue of environmental pollution. Humans inappropriate garbage disposal may result to serious consequences as plastic garbage including face masks will take hundred years to decompose.  Fortunately, individual person can do so much to reverse the negative impacts of garbage disposal problem. For example, every person should minimize the use of single-use plastic products such as plastic cups, cutlery and plates. A high volume of plastics are being dumped daily in landfills, rivers or worse into the oceans. People need to avoid using throw away disposable products to help reduce the potential negative impacts that these have on the environment.  

In conclusion, the government’s proper garbage disposal guidelines may help a country in achieving environmental sustainability. While humans individual response for the protection of natural resources is essential in fighting environmental threats. I hope everyone must play an active role in protecting the environment.
