IELTS Essay: Nuclear Weapons

Some believe that nuclear weapons benefit the world at large.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Answer

After World War II, the number of countries that owned nuclear weapons have gone up. Many leaders think that having such weapons is beneficial to a country in ensuring safety from threats of attacks from superior nations. From my perspective, I totally disagree with the assumption that humanity can benefit from the acquisition of nuclear weapons.

Many people believe that nuclear weapons are the most destructive weapons ever invented. The heat and the impacts during nuclear detonation can kill millions of people and affects natural landscape. One great example is the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 many structures turned into ashes and killed thousands of people. Many have died due to high impact of explosions that result to excruciating heat engulfed around residential areas. Another harmful effect of this sophisticated weapons is that, it can cause long-term human health problems and can jeopardize the earth.  Hence, the establishment of atomic weapons need further study and risks assessment of potential health hazard to humans.

On the contrary, other leaders are aiming to establish nuclear weapons in there respective countries to counterbalance against enemy’s with superpower weaponry.  Most of them feel a high level of concern for a potential nuclear aggression from external forces. For instance, nukes can provide a major role in deterring a war. However, countries with high quality nuclear arsenals are capable enough to intimidate and launch offensive strike towards inferior nations. Its detonation could devastate an entire country affecting humans and the environment.

In conclusion, the use of nuclear weapons has a long-term negative effect to human’s health and the surroundings. Although, it can also contribute to maintain peace among nations but nuclear weapons can trigger conflict and no one can win on this fight. Therefore, I completely disagree that the world will benefit on this most destructive weapons that ever developed.
