IELTS Essay Question:
More and more people are becoming seriously overweight. Some people say that the price increase of fattening foods will solve this problem.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In the last few years, overweight and obesity are keep rising and these problems are becoming prevalent. Governments are blaming obese individuals for doing nothing to prevent it but many people says that by adding extra cost for food with rich in calories is the answer to this epidemic explosion. This paper completely disagree that a price hike is the solution to this looming problem. This essay will dives deeper into why the price increase on fatty foods is not the answer to the surged of overweight issues.
Today, there are number of factors can play role in weight gain and some of these includes food intakes, metabolic rate and lack of exercise. Taking food intakes for instance, more people especially children favoring high-fat, high calorie food such as chocolate and other sweets delicacies. Although, chocolates contains decent amounts of calories, sugar and fat, however, this yummy delight carry flavanols. Flavanols can help improve blood flow to the brain and have a cardio-protective benefits for heart disease patients. By increasing the price of this product, the lower-income families could no longer afford and enjoy the benefits from this food. Hence, price increase will not make sense and will only result to more burden to people in the bottom groups.
In contrast, governments believe that by increasing the price on unhealthy foods would encourage people to choose healthy foods that encourage healthier diet. But, policymakers should not underestimate the possibilities that people may just switch to other variety of foods that are unhealthy too. There are many foods available that are also low in nutritional value and may be less enjoyable, more expensive and harmful alternatives. Overweight is caused by more factors than just over-consumption of high fat foods. In short, high cost cannot limit individual’s personal choices of food to eat especially those from the upper class of society.
In conclusion, focusing on additional price in fatty-foods would only result to consumers changing choices rather than swapping to some healthier alternatives. The idea of adding more taxes on fattening foods will only increase the burdens of poor people in the society. Thus, I fully disagree with this view in solving the issue of obesity.
