More and more people are becoming seriously overweight. Some people say that the price increase of fattening foods will solve this problem.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Overweight and obesity keep rising today than ever before and the problem become prevalent. Governments are blaming obese people for doing nothing about it but many individuals says that adding extra cost for food with rich in calories is the answer to this epidemic explosion. This essay completely disagree that increasing the price is the solution to this problem. This essay will dives deep into why the price hike on fatty foods is not the solution to the surged of overweight issues.
Today, a number of factors can play role in weight gain and some of these includes food intakes, metabolic rate and lack of exercise. Taking food intakes for instance, more people especially children favoring high-fat, high calorie food such as chocolate. Although, chocolates contains hefty levels of calories, sugar and fat, however, this yummy delight contains flavanols, which are known to increase blood flow to the brain and have a cardio-protective benefit for heart disease patients. By increasing the price of this product, the lower-income families could not enjoy the benefits from this food. Do these increases make sense? Increasing in price will just result to more burden to people in the bottom groups.
In contrast, governments believe that increasing prices on unhealthy foods would encourage people to choose healthy foods that encourage healthier diet. Nevertheless, policymakers should not underestimate the possibilities that people may just switch to other variety of foods that are unhealthy too. There are many foods available that are also low in nutritional value and may be less enjoyable, more expensive and harmful alternatives. Overweight is caused by more factors than just over-consumption of high fat foods. In short, high cost cannot limit individual’s personal choices of food to eat especially those from the upper class of society.
In conclusion, focusing on additional price in fatty-foods would only result to consumers changing choices rather than swapping to some healthier alternatives.
