IELTS Essay Question:

Increasing number of people are choosing cosmetology surgery to improve their appearance.

What are the reasons? Do you think is it positive or negative development?

Answer:

Plastic surgical innovations greatly shaping up the present trend of cosmetic surgery. The current medical advances are heavily influenced by social media and rapidly gaining popularity among millennials and upper class in the society. I think that these advances and breakthroughs in the field of cosmetic surgery is a positive progress for those who want to enjoy genuine improvements not just in physical shape but also in enhancing their self-esteem.

At present, many people suffer from low-self-esteem due to lack of body confidence and self criticism. Some people at times criticized their physical figures when they compare their image to an ideal body frame portrayed by the media. The social environment has a significant influence on everyone’s decision to undergo a procedure. Bullying for example, being bullied is a great reason for people to undertake cosmetic operation. The most common and popular surgeries among women are rhinoplasty or commonly known as “nose job” and liposuction. Rhinoplasty is usually performed to enhance the appearance or reshapes the nose to correct breathing problem and other related medical reasons. Liposuction on the other hand, is a cosmetic procedure developed to dissolve excess fat beneath the skin.

Clearly, physical appearance is an important aspect of personal identity and cosmetic surgery can have a positive impact on patient quality of life. Although, cosmetic procedures are frequently impugned by critics as being frivolous and lacking in substantive benefit. However, a study indicates that cosmetic interventions has positive long-term effects on appearance related aspects. Patients can gain high self confidence in their body after the surgery and tend to increase productivity in the workplace. The physical benefits are immediately noticeable and psychological outcomes can be many times be greater than the physical rewards.

To sum up, when a person become unsatisfied with their body image it will greatly affects a person’s self-worth, the potential rewards of plastic surgery are highly individual. Nonetheless, patient must be aware that the surgery should be performed by a highly qualified surgeon.
